The article is interesting but I really felt sad to see a sentence in the article which read :Businessmen from Jammu Kashmir to Madras Kerala sell there goods:
Surely you dont mean Chennai by Madras? And is Kerala and Madras/Chennai meant to be the same?

Kerala is a completely different culture and place from Madras as you call the Chennai city. The Tamil culture and the Kerala culture are both vibrantly beautiful but entirely different and its a pity that when we still write of a place in the south, we dub it Madras.

        Thanks Pallavi,

Its just that one too many a person does this mix up of Madras and Kerala...I remember on my first day of work in Delhi in the pre-mobile days, the telephone operator told me during lunch that I had somebody calling me urgently from Madras. The call was cut off and I tried every person I knew in Madras to see what the matter was...None had seemed to have called me. The call came through once again...It was my Mom and calling from Trivandrum on an urgent matter...

The telephone operator had generalised Trivandrum as Madras...My Tamilian colleague told me when her people call from Coimbatore too, he tells her as Madras...Just that old indignation returning...sorry if this hurt you...but I thought it was worth pointing out.
