SAVANT SYNDROME By Vandan Kumar Agireddy, New Delhi,India
Have you heard this term before I guess most of you might not have come across it or few of you must be thinking that I am talking some thing about zee India\n idol Abhijeet savant. lol nooo.
Actually this is a rare psychiatric phenomenon seen in autistic persons. In this a person with diminished mental ability shows extraordinary skills in one specific field. That’s what this syndrome is about. A very good example of this is if u have watched Justin Hoffman in the movie “rain man”, who was a perfect example of this syndrome with great calculating ability. A ‘calculator savant’
Ok let me give one very good example of this girl Nadia who was born with some mental abnormalities. At the age of 2 and ½ she did not develop any skills that was pertained to the age group. She use to do repetitive wriggling movement of hand, feet etc. She was diagnosed of autism. When she was three her mom was hospitalized for few months and when she returned back she saw the child to be overjoyed. She inexplicably started drawing pictures. What she draw was inexplicable-figures of astonishing beauty and sophistication. For next three yrs Nadia produced drawing after drawing. Everyone was stunned with her drawing skill. Thinking Lady Picasso is born. She refused to use colors, only ballpoint pen would do. She would draw on any kind of paper she could find, including boxes. She would sketch with the utmost concentration, then sit back, survey the result, and wiggle her hand and feet with pleasure. At the same time she was enrolled in several program and special schools but made no progress. Then around ten, now, she began speaking and stopped drawing. She has developed small vocabulary, is responsive to a limited circle of people, and could even handle simple mathematics. When asked to draw, she will produce one, but had none of the genius of her earlier work.
As mysteriously as it appeared, her remarkable artistic talent had vanished.
