On Woman bartenders By Suneetha.B,Trivandrum, India

The Delhi HC verdict allowing woman bartenders has brought in mixed reactions. The Hospitality industry and the new generation of women in search of adventurous professions are understandably delighted about the verdict. Presence of the gentle gender is expected to bring a whole new genteel aspect to bar tending. Five star and other posh hotels who thrive on life-style drinking can now cash in on a different gender behind the bar. More and more women are taking up hospitality industry as a profession and those with flair can take this up as specialization.

On the other hand, is our society ready for this? Are our men mature enough to handle the sight of a pretty face handing out their drink without a dirty thought after a second peg? Jessica Lal is still too fresh in our memory.

And is it really a case of woman’s rights and equal opportunities here? A male bastion is always a challenge for a brave woman, but Indian men have proved that their curiosity about women in ‘men’s’ professions always raise their fear of competition. Men in our small towns still try to bully women drivers in the public. The government does admit that bar tending and pubs are not safe for women; well! But so aren’t trains and roads and even her own home.

Thankfully the matter is back in the Supreme Court now.

Again, on a last note Jessica surely didn’t die because she was a woman, did she?

its utter nonsense, barring women to be bartenders (i m ready to be thrashed by "cynics" for saying this, but what the heck!). if someone forgets to lock his car and the stereo get stolen, is that man barred from buying or driving a car? no.
the law should stop bad men (not all are bad) from doing the bad things, rather than locking women in home. its just so middle - age.
    hah!
i m ready for the brick bats! bring them on
