'Your dream home' By Malini B, Bangalore, India

Can anybody or anything bring about a change in the way government officials function in India? I'm writing this out of my sour experience during the construction of my own house. 'Bribe' constitutes to about 2-3 percent of the construction cost. Mind you, this excludes 'over the table', billed processing fee. Bribing initiates the process of making your 'dream home'. Getting a building plan sanctioned, obtaining a new power supply system, modifying the water supply arrangement is all incomplete till you shell out. Mere 'under the table' transaction doesn't do the trick, it also requires rigorous hospitality, reluctant showering of respect and regular, but polite follow-up calls and visits. Ultimately, you get loads of frustration, increased petrol and mobile phone bills, hypertension as added bonus to you owning a wonderful, passionate home. It is still not over, the experience also lowers your enthusiasm to build another one in your lifetime.
Are we responsible for the happenings as we encourage and are willing to pay money in black to get our job done conveniently?
