In Perspective - WE INDIANS….By Dr. Medha Saykhedkar, Nashik, India

Time and again, I have this feeling that we are an ungrateful lot. We are regularly in the habit of conveniently forgetting what others have done for us! No, not the family or the society, but what the government has done for us. No government in the world is worthy of holding such a venerable position as, the Indian government rightly should. Surprised? Find it to be a tall claim? Well, then take a look at the examples, which I humbly state to substantiate my claim.

Ø       No government, believe me, no govt. could think of such fine ways to make the people think health. Nutritionists recommend a diet rich in raw foods like salads, fruit and fibre. Considering the average level of obesity in the country, what does the Indian government do? It goes ahead and announces a hefty rise in the prices of all cooking fuel. Got it? Well, if the people can’t afford to cook, wouldn’t they be eating raw food?

Ø       Health experts also recommend a daily exercise routine either, brisk walking, jogging or swimming for a healthy populace. The Indian government dutifully goes ahead and implements a pinching rise (enough for all to feel the pinch) in the prices of automobile fuel. People must walk to work (since they can no more afford their own vehicles), or they must run (to board public transport) or they must swim (the roads in monsoon). What better ways to exercise and yet get to work on time?

Ø       Look at education. Isn’t the government unique? The ‘guru – shishya parampara’ which was a venerated one in our vedic philosophy finds no better supporter than the govt. The salient feature of this tradition was interaction between the guru and the shishya. The result is, schools and teachers without meddlesome textbooks (which occasionally make a rare appearance by the end of the academic year)

Ø       The Indian govt. espies a vision. A vision of all its leaders (read politicians) thinking global and going global (?) Hence, we have pot bellied politicians and bureaucrats sitting in snazzy offices with state-of- art technology computers, filling their tiny bellies with rich food or in dire circumstances with food of the rich ( did I say money?) Eat money if you can’t relish food (Diabetics and Heart patients do consider)

Ø       Creativity is the hallmark of the Indian govt. No wonder then that, it encourages all its functionaries to get creative. The outcome; a multitude of schemes for population control and poverty eradication. All these conform to the high standards of imagery as laid down by the artistic faculty. Forget mundane things like population and poverty, but creativity is encouraged even in case of the most sublime of all causes, corruption. The high standards in this case rate only second to China.

In the light of the above what do we Indians do? We go right ahead and criticize such a divine setup. As a law abiding and obliged citizen, I felt it was my duty to bring to light at least some of the divine actions. I fervently hope that these few words do appeal to the conscience of the average Indian who would then surely show some gratitude and be thankful that he lives in India, or he could live in hell.

Though it is painful that we should be degrading ourselves, that is the reality. Corruption or lust for power are not unique to India. Everywhere they exist. But the only difference is that some of the other Governments perform at least the basic duties sincerely and take care of the welfare of the country's general public. Here, the Government officials and politicians do not think twice even to show their greed in laying their hands on mid-day meal programme for the poorest of the poor children, health and education and such other basic issues, which is very mean. I have lost all hopes that things will improve here!
