The Faces We Wear

The pictures look perfect
The smiles all in place
In the photos that chronicle our passing days
The faces we put on to work everyday
Mask the confusion we feel….keeps questions at bay

But the eyes tell a story
Quite different, if you care to look deep
Of all the pain that you carry with you in sleep
When fears become monsters
Running amuck in your dreams.

Thank God for the daylight
Time to put on your face
Don your battle gear and step out again
Take on another day and beguile
All whom you meet with your flippant smile.

So we all go on
Playing parts we don’t really want to play
Because the status quo is something we’d rather not change
Compromise, compromise… no.. no.. don’t complain
Even if it stifles you so much, it pains.

Afraid of what would happen if we took that leap
Into that unknown, unfamiliar deep
Afraid it will be just make believe
We’d rather play it safe
And so we go on in the same way
Day… after day…. after day…
