In Poetry - Legacy of Sita By Bandana Mitra, Patna, India

Legacy of Sita

I walk through fire to purify myself
Otherwise I will not be allowed to sleep with you.
If it is you who touches me, I am a Saint
Otherwise I am a slut.

I am the mistress of your home, mother of your children
I share your name, fame wealth,
As long as we  share the same bed .
Otherwise I get nothing.

I am to follow you, be it heaven or hell
But I must not take the lead.
I am to be your most favourite disciple
But never to contradict
I am to assist you to achieve your goal
But must not have one for myself.

And I am to remain grateful to you
After all You have made my life

BUT

Hello! Don’t you think
Things could have been much more fun
If we could stand side by side
And become friend ?

thanks to everyone who liked my poem. Personally I do not think that things have changed much, still very few women get the support and understanding from the family to establish an identity of their own. Still a hierarchy does exist within a family barring a few exceptions.
Once again thanks to you all to find time to go through my poem and commenton it.
