In Poetry Corner - The Vengeful Spirit! By Sudha Varadarajan, Chennai, India

The Vengeful Spirit!

S
mouldering anger gushes forth -

Thrashing the nails of my coffin!

Revenge reverberates through

The reticent sinews of the diseased flesh.

The festered soul awaits the festival of death!

Let not your marigolds decorate my grave!

No!  Do not expect poetry from infested sores!

There is no melody in the mutilated mould.

It's only the pus of  inflamed tissues,

It's only the pungent odour of polluted blood

That you will taste at the macabre feast.

To you I come with a relish;

With a Manichean delight,

I rise from my ashes

Like a phoenix -

To strike you dead!

Sudha Varadarajan

Thankyou Sneha for your comment. The quantum of violence that we read about, experience and witness at various levels of global society has succeeded in corroding our consciousness and has rendered us incapable of responding - perhaps this was my reaction to the perennial torrent of violence that has engulfed and penetrated our societies. This anger, revenge and frustration should rightfully translate into constructive responses - atleast at the personal level, it should make us more sensitive.

Hi Sudha. Thanks for your detailed feedback. Have you read the 'Angry young Man' plays that were written by John Osborne? I felt a similar kind of anger emancipating from your poem. Indeed, life is not 'just' about all roses; infact it never is, if you ask me and your poem brings out the aspect so very well. You must surely write more.

    Sudha,
Nice to see you here, Madam! But I enjoyed your other poetry, esp "Salute to a Sentinel" more than this - Please continue with nice, refreshing poetry, some of which I have read, and I am sure that will brighten up someone's day. Vengeful spirit is almost making the reader take up arms?! Maybe that was your intention, but hope 4iw readers get to see your positive poetry more!

Thanks Om for reminding me of brighter, sunny aspects of life. Yes, it is always better to focus on positive aspects that will help us maintain sanity.

Will try to cross over soon!

      Thankyou, Leslie!
Bitterness and anger are emotions that find better expression than happiness and compassion - be it in action or words. Shouldn't we try and break this negative trend?
